Successful Transition to University

Michele Toner is a credentialled ADHD Coach who has been supporting people with ADHD for 20 years and is passionate about her work. Her PhD thesis examined the challenges faced by university students with ADHD and the supports/ strategies required to overcome them.  She has been involved with ADHD WA in many capacities and currently serves as chairperson of the Board, and a member of the Professional Advisory Body. She was also an inaugural Board member of the Australian Association of ADHD Professionals (AADPA) and ADHD Australia. Michele is a co-author, with Desiree Silva, of the ADHD GO-TO-GUIDE FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS.

In this presentation Michele will discuss information concerning alternative paths to university, as up to 70% of uni entrants qualify via a pathway other than an ATAR score .

The move from school to university means students transition from a highly structured to a relatively unstructured environment. Whilst this can be liberating at first, the novelty soon wears off as the work builds up. Students often become overwhelmed and can feel tempted to withdraw. But there is much that can be done to make university ADHD-friendly and keep them studying successfully.

Michele will outline the kinds of support available for students with ADHD and discuss strategies to address the most common challenges she sees in her student-clients.
