How to Teach Children Social Problem Solving and Why it’s so Important

Connie Buckingham Psychologist and Author

PhD candidate University of Melbourne (Dept. Psychology), Australian Psychological Society member

Connie is passionate about sharing social emotional research and knowledge with young people, their families, educators and clinicians.  Connie’s work has developed from research and practice.

Connie is the Author of The Friendship Saver Program, an Australian evidence-based Social and Emotional curriculum for Primary School Children.  Connie has shared the program with hundreds of schools across Australia, with the aim to build resilience and social and emotional learning in all students.

Connie is also the Director of The Social Learning Studio, a  multi-disciplinary practice that works with children, their families and their community.   The focus of The Social Learning Studio is very clear.  Work together with young people to help them to achieve their goals and discover new learning by understanding their interests, talents and strengths.  When a young person is understood, engaged, interested and curious, learning and growth follows.

In addition to writing The Friendship Saver Program, Connie also developed a social skills group model called Dynamic Social Skills Groups.  These groups are theory-based and designed to help individuals from 6 to 50 with a range of social deficits. Participants engage social skills group challenges with a clear understanding of their social goals, a readiness to be challenged, and a willingness to take the plunge outside of their comfort zone, aided by a group theme that promises to inspire or entertain.  Programs such as ‘Movie Making’, ‘Pizza Club’ and ‘Art Collaboration’ provide an engaging context for real life social learning with others.
